Report: Offshore wind power to increase

"The power generated by offshore wind farms is expected to increase by a factor of 17 by 2017, according to a clean-tech market research firm.
"…[The report] estimates the worldwide generating capacity of offshore wind farms will jump from 4.1 gigawatts of installed capacity in 2011 to 70.1 gigawatts by the end of 2017."

[Peter Asmus, senior analyst for the research:] "Some of the world's best wind resources are located offshore…Often, these high-potential areas are in shallow ocean waters relatively close to urban population centers. Interest in freshwater offshore wind is also picking up, especially in the Great Lakes in the United States and Canadian Midwest."

"European nations are the current leaders in the industry, but China is expected to pull even with them by 2017, according to…[the] market forecast.
"The report notes that developing the market for offshore wind power faces significant challenges, in particular cost. Building wind farms off shore is up to three times as expensive as building them on land."
